How long does a garage door spring last?
Springs are rated in cycles, not years. A standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles — roughly seven years at four openings a day, but closer to three or four years for a busy Utah household using the garage as the main door.
Should I replace one spring or both?
Both, when the door uses a pair. They wear at the same rate, so a spring that breaks means its twin is close behind. Replacing the pair on one visit in Utah costs far less than two separate call-outs a few months apart.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We'd strongly advise against it. A wound torsion spring stores hundreds of pounds of force, and releasing it without the right winding bars causes serious injuries every year. It also needs the correct wire size, length and wind count for your door's weight.
