Torsion vs extension springs: which one is on your door

Telling them apart in five seconds

Torsion springs mount on a steel shaft directly above the door opening, running horizontally across the header. One long spring, or two shorter ones either side of a centre bracket.

Extension springs run horizontally along the ceiling above each of the two horizontal tracks, stretching and contracting as the door moves. Two long, thinner springs, one on each side, usually with a safety cable running through the middle.

How each one works

A torsion spring stores energy by twisting. As the door lowers, cables wind onto drums and twist the spring; as it rises, the spring unwinds and lifts. The whole assembly is contained on one shaft, which is why torsion systems control the door more smoothly.

An extension spring stores energy by stretching. It's a simpler and cheaper system, which is why it turns up on older and lighter doors, but it applies force at the two edges rather than through a central shaft, so doors tend to move less evenly.

Which lasts longer

Torsion, typically. Standard torsion springs are rated around 10,000 cycles with high-cycle options reaching 20,000 to 50,000. Extension springs generally come in lower and are more prone to losing tension unevenly, leaving one side lifting harder than the other.

The safety difference

This is the real distinction. When a torsion spring fails it stays on its shaft. When an extension spring fails it can become a projectile, which is exactly why safety cables run through the middle of them.

If you have extension springs and no safety cables threaded through them, get cables fitted. It's a cheap job and it's the single most important safety item on that style of door.

Is converting worth it?

Converting extension to torsion typically costs more than a straight spring replacement, because it means a new shaft, drums, bearing plates and cables. It's worth it if you're replacing the door anyway, if the door is heavy, or if headroom allows and you want smoother, quieter operation.

If the door is light, the existing system is safe-cabled and you just need a spring, a like-for-like replacement is the sensible spend.

Wire diameter, inside diameter, length and wind direction all have to match the door's weight. It's measured, not guessed.
