Are insulated garage doors worth it in Utah?

What R-value actually means here

R-value measures resistance to heat flow. An uninsulated single-layer steel door sits around R-0 to R-2 — effectively a sheet of metal between your garage and a Utah January.

A polystyrene-core door runs roughly R-6 to R-9. A polyurethane-injected door reaches R-12 to R-18, because the foam is injected and expands to fill the section completely, bonding to the steel.

Treat manufacturer R-values as comparative rather than absolute. The useful comparison is between two doors on the same spec sheet, not against a wall assembly.

Which garages actually benefit

Clear yes: attached garages, garages sharing a wall with a living room or bedroom, garages with a room directly above, and any garage you heat or work in.

Marginal: attached garages used purely for parking, with a well-insulated house wall between.

Probably not: detached garages you never heat and only use for storage. Spend the money on a better spring system instead.

The benefits people don't expect

The thermal case is the obvious one, but three others come up more often in feedback.

Noise. Insulated sections are stiffer and damp vibration. The door is quieter opening, and it blocks street noise better.

Rigidity. A foam-filled section resists dents far better than a hollow one, which matters if the door takes knocks.

Comfort in the room above. Houses with a bedroom over the garage report the biggest practical difference, and it's usually the reason people say the upgrade was worth it.

Cost and the heavier-door catch

Insulated double doors installed commonly run $1,850 to $3,400 against roughly $1,100 to $1,900 for uninsulated.

The catch is weight. An insulated door is meaningfully heavier than the one it replaces, which means the spring system has to be sized for the new weight, and an older opener may be under-rated for it. Both should be assessed as part of the quote, not discovered on install day.
